I am not a PS fan but I try to get my hands on a few projects. Especially since I am a landscaper and there can be a few months that are slow. I have driven this truck when I worked for this company for many years. I know it is well maintained and have a good relationship with the owner. The truck in question is a 2004 PS F450 with the 6.0. It has 115k miles on it and needs a fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and all 8 injectors and glow plugs. I think ford wants $7k for all these repairs along with ball joints. I can buy the truck for $5150 "As is" I think this truck could go for 20k... Steal it or pass?

IF that's all that's wrong with the truck, you could make some $$. If more is wrong, you could easily eat up your potential profits..

Word.
I have delt with the ford dealership with this truck over the years many times. They never steered me wrong. I am not going to pay their premium price.
I got a ps mechanic that works for himself and he has a excellent top notch reputation. He quoted me $3000-3500 for parts and labor.
I will do the ball joints myself.

So, you think you can sell it for about twice what you would have in it, after repairs?

If I want to sell it within a week or 2 I would have to list it at 14-15k... If I was patient it will sell in the spring for about 18k...
I don't want to use it in fear of something else breaking...

Everyone says that if you block the Egr and upgrade to forged pistons that would be a good truck to keep. This issue has nothing to do with that... lol Sent from my DROID BIONIC using proboards

I am thinking about doing all the work myself... Talk me out of it!
It would probably save me $1000-1500 on the project...

A few things to consider.. How much free time do you have? How quickly do you want to sell the truck? How much longer will "you" doing the work take vs. paying a shop to do it? Do you have all the tools needed?
I understand wanting to save money and get the satisfaction of doing it yourself, but the longer you hold onto it (if you buy it), the more $$ you'll spend on insurance AND the more likely it is that something ELSE might come up that you'll need to repair/replace..
If you plan to keep it until Spring, when demand for that type of vehicle may be higher, most of what I just asked about is probably moot.. Except for the cost of insurance and any other costs associated with hanging onto it for a few months..

Couple good points you got there. I would almost wager that I have all the tools for the job. Being that all you have to remove in the engine department to get to the valve covers are sockets and torx. The fuel pressure regulator sits right above the driver side valve cover so I will be there to do it anyways...
That part should take 5-6 hours.
If I absolutely needed to finish a couple all nighters wont slow me down.

Well, I was also thinking about how much FREE time do you really have these days, with the new kid and all..? Yeah really. But one thing I am thankful for is if a project like this takes all my free time I wont hear it from the wife. She knows I can't stop until I get the project done...
